
Photo by Kim Cupples Things didn’t look good early for the University School of Jackson volleyball team Tuesday afternoon at home in a key DII-A-West match with Southern Baptist Educational Center. But behind the stellar play of Kayla Petty, Zuzanna Wojtas and Halle Priester, the Lady Bruins erased a two games to none deficit to win in dramatic fashion 20-25, 23-25, 25-11, 25-22 and 15-9. Petty had 15 kills and 13 digs for USJ and Wojtas added 11 kills. Abbey Orr had nine kills for the winners and 19 assists. Priester got the ball where it needed to be and finished with a team-high 23 assists. Maggie Rheney added 14 digs and Anna Giddens had 12. USJ moved to 13-2 overall and 7-2 in league…
Photo by Charlie Sutton. Fayette Academy hosted SBEC in a Division II-A match-up Friday night and fell to the Trojans 24-6. Rain began to fall as the captains met in the center of the field for the coin toss, however it did not seem to bother the Vikings as they took an early 6-0 lead. The rain subsided and SBEC went to work both on the ground and in the air with 24 unanswered points. The win moved to the Trojans to 3-1. The Vikings fell to 1-2.
Last year the Trojans featured one of the most potent rushing attacks in the area, averaging 297 yards a game. That production helped SBEC win 11 games and advance all the way to the DII-A State Championship game. This season the success has been comparable (the Trojans were 6-1 through seven games), but the way the Trojans have gotten things done has been quite different. The rushing attack, led by nearly 600 yards from junior Jeremy Carson, has been solid, but its been the passing game that has been putting points on the board. Junior quarterback Ryan DuBois threw for 1,420 yards, 23 touchdowns and just three picks in the Trojans’ first seven games. The Trojans had just 634 passing yards all of last season.…
