Center Hill falls in round two; Olive Branch advances to quarters

Photo by Roben Nobles The Center Hill football team made some history this year, advancing to the playoffs for the first time and defeating Amanda Elzy in round one, 43-30. Senior quarterback Cameron Dougher rushed for 120 yards on 12 carries in the win. But the season came to an end Friday night with a 21-7 loss to Itawamba in the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs. The Mustangs finished the season with a 7-6 record. In Class 6A action, Olive Branch (10-2) defeated Warren Central 38-6 to move into a quarterfinal showdown with Madison Central. Southaven (9-3) lost to Clinton 31-23. In Class 5A action, Hernando (7-5) fell to Ridgeland 44-34.

The first half of the season hasn’t gone quite as well as Southaven Lady Charger coach David Baldwin had hoped. Southaven lost some tight games to some league opponents and will be an underdog come tournament time. But, considering the team has a lot of senior leadership, Baldwin is optimistic as the season heads down the home stretch. Senior Shanequa Grisby gets things started from the point guard position and can make a lot things happen.  Lacey Perkins, another senior, is a sharp shooter who can score in bunches when she gets warmed up. Courtney Nunnery, Tabetha McCree and center Charquita Anderson, all seniors, are also capable of making big contributions. 2008 In ReviewThe Chargers made some headway this season in probably the most difficult region in the North Mississippi. Southaven lost to Tupelo, Olive Branch and South Panola, three of the best teams in the state, but beat everybody else in league play to make the state playoffs. The Chargers lost a very close game in the first round of the playoffs to Madison Central, a team that ended up beating Olive Branch and making the state semifinals. Senior quarterback Tyler Brant, a first-year starter, had a solid year, passing for 1,118 yards and 17 touchdowns.
