A new coach came in and the Turkeys were much more competitive after winning no games during the 2007-08 season. The team beat Macon Road Baptist twice, defeated Catholic and was competitive in some other games. Junior guard Addison Blake is a good ball handler who gets the offense going. It was quite a year for the St. Mary’s golf team. Led the improved play of sophomore Ellen Mitchell and junior Allyson Patterson, plus the addition of eighth-grader Alana Olswing, the Turkeys proved to be the best DII-A girls’ golf team on this side of the state. St. Mary’s took fourth place at the DII-A State Tournament played Oct. 6-7 at the Old Fort Golf Course in Murfreesboro. Mitchell and Patterson led the way. A year after shooting a 182 at the state tournament, Mitchell fired a 171 (87-84) to finish tied for eighth in the individual competition. University School of Jackson senior Amelia Ray ended her high school golf career on a high note. Last week at the Division II-A State Golf Tournament in Murfreesboro, Ray shot a two day total of 161 (82-79) to finish fifth in the individual competition and lead her team to a fifth-place finish. Sophomore Ann Elizabeth Lynch shot a 204 (109-95) and freshman Madeline Ray fired a 267 (145-122) for USJ. St. Mary’s finished fourth.
