
Photo by Beau Arnold St. George’s had a little too much firepower on Monday and defeated DII-A-West rival USJ in three straight games, 25-23, 25-20, 25-17. Kayla Petty had nine kills for the Lady Bruins and Abbey Orr added five kills and three aces. Hallie Priester led USJ with 12 assists. The loss dropped USJ to 15-3.
The St. George’s Lady Gryphons lost just one starter to graduation last year, giving head coach Scott Crockett reason to be optimistic about the 2008-09 season. And for the most part, St. George’s is putting together a solid year. Other than Bishop Byrne, SBEC and Lausanne, the league’s front-runners, the Lady Gryphons have fared well within DII-A. There will be a race for the No. 4 spot in the league, and St. George’s figures to be right in the middle of it. Senior Adeline Brown has been steady, and so has sophomore Kellie Kosar. 2008 In ReviewA year after going 12-0 and winning the DII-A state championship, it was a rebuilding year for a young Gryphons squad. St. George’s started off a little slowly in league play, but won three straight DII-A games down the stretch to qualify for the playoffs. The Gryphons’ offense wasn’t as productive as last year, but it was still pretty good. Senior Blake Deaton rushed for 710 yards and eight scores. The Gryphons passed a little more this season, and junior quarterback Rob Hyde had a solid season passing as well as running.
