Photo by: Jeff Ireland 08-09 Record:  1-23, district tournament Head Coach:  Linda McKinnie District:  13-AA Returning Starters G - Shalunda Barbee (Sr.) F - Brittany Lyles (Jr.) F - Krystle Hurdle (Jr.) Starters Lost G - Mercedes Norfork 09-10 Outlook Mercedes Norfork was the leader of this team the last three years.  Her production will be hard to replace but there is some experience coming back.  Senior guard Shalunda Barbee and junior forwards Brittany Lyles and Krystle Hurdle have all played plenty.  Lyles and Hurdle can be effective players in the paint.  Barbee is the kind of player who can get hot on the perimeter.  Keep an eye on Kaneisha Maclin this season.  She can score in a variety of ways, including from behind the…

Ripley pushes past Hillcrest in second half

Ripley trailed Hillcrest at the half 8-6 Friday night. But the Tigers’ homecoming crowd went home happy as the Tigers rallied in the second half for a 28-8 win. Garvon Bonds capped off an 11-play, 70-yard drive in the third quarter with a four-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers a 14-8 lead they would never lose. An Eric Scruggs 48-yard punt return set up a two-yard run touchdown run by Brandon Blackwell later in the half. A Joseph Bursey interception followed and led to Ripley’s final score on a Bonds touchdown run. Blackwell scored Ripley’s first touchdown on a two-yard run. Marquette Dockery threw a 15-yard touchdown pass for Hillcrest in the first quarter. Bursey led Ripley (3-4) with 139 yards on 20 carries.…

Covington beats Ripley in district action

Covington got a late first-half touchdown Friday night at home against Ripley, and that ended up being all the points the Chargers would need. B.J. Burnett scored on a 25-yard run with 1:43 left in the first half and the Chargers won the District 13-AA game 9-0. Bishop Davis kicked a field goal midway through the fourth quarter for the game’s final tally. Ripley had a touchdown pass called back on a penalty late in the game.
