Kirby makes big lead hold up against Brighton

Photo by Fred Brooks Kirby jumped out to a 21-0 lead Friday night in Brighton and defeated the Cardinals 49-21 in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs. The Cougars will take on White Station Friday night in round two. Kirby got on the board when Tyrone Clark picked off a Danny Potter pass and returned it 50 yards for the score. Deion Woods hit Fred Plummer on a 60-yard touchdown pass later in the period and threw a short touchdown pass to Storm Johnson to make the score 21-0. Potter hit John Osborne and James Murray on touchdown passes in the second quarter to make the score 21-14 at the half. But the second half belonged to Kirby as Woods threw two…

The Basics Head coach:  Chester Flowers Jr. (3rd season) District:  15-AAA 2008 Record:  5-5 Playoffs:  Did not qualify Base offense:  Multiple Base defense:  4-3 Returning starters:  5 offense, 6 defense Overview The offense should be in pretty good shape with the return of senior quarterback Deion Woods. He received several postseason honors after throwing for 1,852 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2008. Senior Fred Plummer is his top returning receiver. He caught 38 passes for 478 yards a season ago. Junior Antwon Morrison looks like the team’s number one option at running back. Senir Jamal Cooper and junior Salim Newson will lead the defense.
