North Side’s Prather signs with Florida

A few weeks after making a verbal commitment to the University of Florida, Prather signed on the dotted line as dozens of family members, friends, coaches and teammates watched in the North Side library. Several cell phone cameras were clicking away as Prather signed papers and spoke with local media outlets. “Something caught his eye with Florida,â€?? said Casey’s dad, Kevin Prather. “He really liked the coaches there.â€?? Florida won the national championship in 2006 and 2007 and was one of many D-1 schools after the 6-5 Prather. “Coach (Billy) Donovan,â€?? Casey said when asked what drew him to Florida ahead of other suitors that included Vanderbilt, Michigan, Memphis…

Mitchell stops North Side with early burst

An impressive turnaround season for the North Side Indians came to abrupt end Friday night at home in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs. Mitchell scored seven touchdowns in the first half and went on to a 54-13 win. Robert Redmond hooked with wideout Keiwone Malone for four touchdowns in the first half. North Side’s two scores came in the second quarter on a six-yard run by Adam Craig and an 80-yard kickoff return by Zach Cole. Redmond completed 18 of 25 passes for 359 yards and Malone caught seven balls for 179 yards. The Tigers (8-3) play Lawrence County in round two. North Side finished 7-4 a year after winning just two games.   .

Five area teams have turned things around this season

Photo by Roger Smith Heading into the 2009 football season, there were several teams that we all knew were going to be very good this season. Big things were expected of teams like Milan and Henry County, and they’ve delivered. Both teams were undefeated through Week 7. Mitchell, a team that advanced to the Class 3A state title game, has been very good this season. Same goes Memphis University School, the defending DII-AA state champs. But every year some teams come of out of seemingly nowhere and grab headlines by dramatically increasing their win total from the previous season. Last year it was teams like South Fulton and Kirby. This year there is no shortage of teams like that. Let’s start with Obion County Central.…
