
West Tennessee was well-represented when the Tennessee Titans Mr. Football winners were announced in Nashville on Monday. Area players Jake Overbey (USJ), Josh Carroll (Adamsville), Jonathan Brown (CBHS), Barry Brunetti (MUS), Anthony Hayes (White Station) and Steven Stafford (ECS) were among players who won the state’s most prestigious football award. Overbey, the DII-A Back of the Year who is just a junior, has thrown for 2,695 yards and 44 touchdowns this season. His Bruins will take on Knoxville Webb Thursday in the DII-A state title game. Jake Overbey and Austin Martindale got together when it mattered most. Following a Davidson Academy turnover with just over two minutes left in the game, Overbey found Martindale on a five-yard touchdown pass with 12 seconds left to give the Bruins a 16-13 DII-A semifinal state playoff win in Nashville. The win propels USJ into the state title game Dec. 3 in Cookeville. Davidson Academy held Overbey, a Mr. Football finalist, in check most of the game. The Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Awards will be presented to the top 10 backs and linemen in five classifications of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association on Monday, November 30, 2009, at the Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference Center in Murfreesboro. For the eighth consecutive year, the top kicker in the state will be recognized with a Mr. Football Award. There are three finalists in this category, regardless of their school’s classification.
