White Station blows past Cordova

Photo by Jeff Ireland Julian Burton scored three times Friday night at the Memphis Faigrounds to lead White Station past Cordova 42-7 in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs. The Spartans (8-3) play Kirby in round two. Cordova’s season ends at 6-5. Burton scored on touchdown runs of 13 and 15 yards in the first half as White Station jumped out to a 28-0 lead. He added a 55-yard touchdown reception from Anthony Hayes in the third quarter to finish with 202 all-purpose yards. Antonio Chetham had a pair of touchdown runs for White Station and Hayes ran for one. Travis Thornhill scored Cordova’s lone touchdown with a 78-yard run.

Turnovers help Millington defeat Cordova

Photo, story by Thomas Sellers Jr. The magic equation of Friday night for the Millington Trojans was “turnover = touchdown.” Using that formula, Millington left Cordova with a 35-7 win and improved to 4-3 for the season. Led by junior backup quarterback Mario Harwell, the Trojans took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter when Harwell located receiver Chris Miller for a 12-yard touchdown. The Trojans’ next score came when linebacker Alan Cross recovered a fumble. Stanton Brown transformed that into an eight-yard rushing TD. Millington’s 14-0 halftime lead grew in the third quarter when Trojan Carl Payne made an interception. Moments later Millington running back Roland Genesey crossed the goal line from one yard out. Story/Photo by Fred Brooks Cordova defeated Brighton 34-32 in a wild game Friday night in Brighton. Does lighting strike twice in the same place? It almost happened twice for Brighton, which won a late fumble return last week. Brighton got on the scoreboard with 7:15 left in the first quarter when Treyshun Gardner scored on a 10-yard touchdown run. With the extra point it made the score 7-0 Brighton. On the kickoff after the TD, Brighton was able to recover the loose ball at the 30 yard line. With 5:54 left in the first quarter Brighton was able to score on 10-yard pass from Danny Potter to James Murray. With the extra point the score was 14-0.
