Houston, Collierville advance to state volleyball tournament

Photo by Fred Brooks Munford and Brighton had a chance to make the Class AAA State Volleyball Tournament Thursday in sectional action, but both teams came up short. Brighton traveled to Collierville and lost 25-13, 25-11, 25-19. The Lady Cardinals, winners of the District 13-AAA Tournament, ended the season with a 27-10 record. Munford, the Region 7-AAA champs and District 13-AAA regular season champs, lost at home to Houston 25-14, 25-17, 25-18. Scarlet Gable wrapped up a stellar junior season with 13 kills and four digs in the match. Crystal Williams had five kills and six digs while Brandi Hale added 13 assists and four digs. Magan Dennison had 10 digs for the Lady Cougars (29-9). Elizabeth Zampini paced Houston (37-15) with 18 kills. Gable…

Photo by Fred Brooks The Collierville volleyball team has simply been one of the top teams in the state the last few seasons, and nothing much has changed this season. Collierville wrapped up the regular season with 28 wins and an impressive win over St. Benedict in the next-to-last match of the year. The players change from year to year, but the results seem to always be the same. This year hitter Mackenzie Gass has been a force at the net, racking up a lot of kills throughout the year. Collierville likes to use two setters, and that formula has worked well this season. Sarah Sutton and Emily Perry have filled those roles this season and have gotten the ball where it needs to be…

Houston, Brighton place at AAA golf tourney

By Steve Hendrickson The Brighton High School 2009 boys and girls golf teams coached by Barry White finished a truly great season of golf this year finishing seventh and eighth,respectively, at the TSSAA 2009 Class AAA State Golf Championship held at Old Fort Golf Course last week.  The 36-hole event hosted eight teams from across the state including team champions Farragut (Boys) and Soddy Daisy (Girls), Hendersonville, Cookville, Ravenwood, Siegel, Houston, Brighton, and Cocke County.  The individual Class AAA State champion for the boys was Jordan Jennings from Jefferson County (143) and for the girls was Taylor Manning from Ravenwood (141). “This was a culmination of a lot of hard work by our boys and girls teams,” said BHS head golf coach Barry White.  “The…
