Running game, defense leading Eagles

Photo by James Webb/Chester County Independent At the midway point of the football season, Chester County had experienced mixed results. With a 2-3 record, the Eagles still had work to do to get to the playoffs. A strong defense and a productive running game, two football tenants that any coach would love, have been the reason the team was 2-1 in District 14-AA. In district wins at home against Fayette-Ware and on the road versus McNairy Central, the Eagles allowed an average of just 13 points a game.  Several players have been responsible for the play of the Eagles’ defense, but three guys – Michael Segerson, Adam Shackelford and Kyle Newsom – are the biggest reasons. Chester County Eagles Football Preview 2009

The Basics Head coach:  Jeff Cupples (7th season) District:  14-AA 2008 Record:  6-5 Playoffs:  First round Base offense:  Wing-T Base defense:  3-5 Returning starters:  3 offense, 4 defense Overview With the loss of quite a few players to graduation, the play of seniors Ethan Ross and J.D. Burton will be very important. Ross, the quarterback, and Burton, a speedy tailback, are both three-year starters who also play some defense. Senior Tyler Dutton is a key guy in the defensive backfield. Senior Barrie Wilson leads an offensive line that was decimated by graduation. Mitchell Hunt is another key senior who plays in the defensive backfield.

Through mid-January, the Eagles were 9-6 and right in the thick of things in the district. Key wins over Lexington, McNairy Central and Camden have been big reasons for the team’s success. Balanced scoring has also been a major story line. Senior Harold Spain has led the way, averaging 15 points a game.  But plenty of other guys have stepped up, including seniors Brent Rowsey (12 ppg), Chandler Cavaness (11 ppg) and Graham Poston (9 ppg). The…
