The Schaumburg boys’ volleyball team executed these game fundamentals en route to their two-game sweep and regional championship match victory over Barrington on Wednesday night. The Saxons won consecutive close battles by scores of 25-20 and 25-22. The difference in the match was Saxons ability to reset the majority of the Barrington’s offensive fronts. On four occasions during the second game junior setter Blake Nelson was able to take the second volley and place it perfectly for senior outside hitter Sanup Desai’s kill. With a 19-17 lead in the second game Nelson took advantage of the play’s…
Conant’s Sam Armando (9) battles for position against a Schaumburg defender. Story and Photos By: Alex Mayster In a sectional semifinal pushed late into the night due to lighting issues, it was Conant’s Hailey Andress that put the lights out on Schaumburg’s season. Andress’ goal midway through the third overtime period pushed the Cougars girls soccer team past the Saxons 2-1; sending Conant onto the finals of the Schaumburg sectional. The junior defender collected the ball on a dead sprint down the sideline and realized she would have an opportunity to score as the goalkeeper moved up in the box. From there it was a matter of getting it past…
Hoffman junior defender Alex Kramer (23) prepares to guard Schaumburg’s Patrick Hayes (10) on Monday night. Story and Photos By: John Juettner The prolonged attack trumped the quick strikes in Monday’s boys’ lacrosse game between Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg. The Hawks were able to control play for most of the game – and rebound when Schaumburg found the back of the net – on their way to a 10-5 win over the host Saxons. Hoffman scored the first five goals of the game, but two quick goals before halftime from Schaumburg midfielder Zack Beck, and attacker Ryan Matyas suddenly put the game within reach for the Saxons when the second half began. Hoffman…
Schaumburg junior setter Blake Nelson tries to block a Conant kill attempt. Story and Photos By: Charlie Burroughs Sometimes an uninspired practice the day before a game doesn’t result in a loss. Such was the case for Schaumburg boys’ volleyball team who defeated Conant in two games Thursday night. Energy and emotion that seemed to lack in recent days for the Saxons wasn’t present in the 25-22 and 25-21 straight game sets over the Cougars. Coach Kyle Reid said the academic stress of a few players taking Advanced Placement classes has taken away from recent practices. “A lot of kids have had a lot of difficult hard test to get through,” said Reid. “They’re great kids…

Story and Photo By: Dick Quagliano As he sat in the dugout, St. Viator’s Lou Cairo was counting the batters in front of him. His team trailed by four runs with two outs and had a runner on first. “I was just hoping to get a chance to bat,” Cairo said. After Kevin Gannon walked and Derrick Noel singled, Cairo found himself in the batter’s box with the bases load. He would not be there long. Cairo hit the next pitch over the left field fence for a gram slam to help the Lions forge a 15-15 tie with Schaumburg Tuesday in Arlington Heights. “I just missed one earlier and…
