What matters is Repeat Athlete wants them.       Repeat Athlete is a charitable organization that donates pre-owned cleats to underprivileged athletes. Schaumburg displays its regional championship plaque. Story and Photos By: Charlie Burroughs       Passing, setting, and going for the kill.       The Schaumburg boys’ volleyball team executed these game fundamentals en route to their two-game sweep and regional championship match victory over Barrington on Wednesday night. The Saxons won consecutive close battles by scores of 25-20 and 25-22.       The difference in the match was Saxons ability to reset the majority of the Barrington’s offensive fronts. On four occasions during the second game junior setter Blake Nelson was able to take the second volley and place it perfectly for senior outside hitter Sanup Desai’s kill. With a 19-17 lead in the second game Nelson took advantage of the play’s…

Repeat performance for Fremd

The Fremd girls water polo team poses with its 2010 sectional championship trophy. Story and Photo By: John Juettner       It’s nice to be back for Fremd, but the Vikings are looking for more.       For the second year in a row, the Fremd girls’ water polo team is one of the final eight teams playing in the state of Illinois. The Vikings defeated host Barrington 12-3 in Saturday’s sectional final to advance to the elite eight.       “It’s awesome,” Fremd coach Brian Newby said. “It’s probably one of the best feelings other than brining home a trophy at state.”       Bringing home a trophy is exactly what Fremd (29-1) did last year with its third place…

Hawks junior pitcher Emily Allan delivers a pitch against Barrington on Friday. Story and Photos By: Charlie Burroughs       Hoffman Estates’ softball team is learning to play a full game. Friday against Barrington they played part of one in a 13-3 loss.       “We have to learn to play seven innings,” Hoffman Estates coach Lindsey Hamma said of her young ball club. “We came tough for three innings; we stayed mentally tough for three innings. In that fourth inning we let the pressure get the best of us.”       Through three and a half innings the Hawks looked on par with the Fillies (28-4, 12-3), who are in second place in the Mid-Suburban League West. After falling behind 3-0,…

Fillies defeat Hersey in the Soccer Bowl for MSL championship

Barrington celebrates its MSL Soccer Bowl win over Hersey. Story and Photos By: Charlie Burroughs       Take the best moment in your entire life and multiply it by 100.       A wild description by Barrington sophomore midfielder Kathryn Avedon about her game winning goal during penalty kicks over Hersey in Friday’s Mid-Suburban League Soccer Bowl. An exhausting two period, two overtime scoreless defensive match came down to the fifth frame in a shootout. Fillies and Huskies got a chance to showcase their offensive talent during the one-on-one shootout and four straight players from each team successfully scored. It was the fifth frame when Huskies sophomore Nicole Pietro’s shot was too tall and hit off the top crossbar opening the door for…

Fremd knocks off Barrington in extra innings
Kolakowski's sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth drives in the game-winning run

Fremd right fielder Evan Wright prepares to bat with Barrington catcher Max Redpath ready to receive the pitch. Story and Photos By: John Juettner       He hadn’t played in four games, but he sure came up big for Fremd on Monday evening at Barrington.       Zenon Kolakowski missed all of last week after crashing into the outfield fence when the Vikings took on Elk Grove on April 30.       He didn’t show any residual effects against the Broncos, his first game back in the lineup.       Kolakowski made two diving catches in the center field, and was 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Kolakowski’s final RBI came on a sacrifice fly in the top of the…

The sophomore hit two home runs, and Fremd won 7-0

Megan Hubbard went deep twice and Lena Brottman kept Barrington in check as Fremd flexed its muscles to cruise past host Barrington 7-0 Wednesday.       Hubbard belted a pair of solo home runs while Brottman fanned seven and walked none, while allowing just four hits as Fremd (18-1, 7-0) opened up its lead on Barrington (17-4, 5-3) in the MSL West.       “Megan was on fire,” said Brottman, who improved to 16-1. “She just turned on that first one and gave us momentum.”       Hubbard belted a two-out home in the second to get Brottman and the Vikings going in the right direction.       “I didn’t think it was out,” said Hubbard, who is…
